Tsunami 2025-07-29

A tidal wave at Honolii
The day started out flat. Nobody was catching any waves, so we took arty shots instead.

After the Civil Defense alert went out, the lifeguards cleared the beach. The cops came later to clear out some stragglers, leaving Honolii completely empty during the day for the first time we’ve ever seen:

The warning sirens went off several times, scaring a flock of pigeons into flight:

This made the local ‘io very excited (but we think he or she went home hungry):

The Pride of America left port three hours early, possibly stranding some passengers (it should be ok, the ship’s scheduled stop for the next day was Kona, so any castaways should be able to catch up):

At the advertised time of the tsunami, nothing happened. It got darker and the webcam became useless. Even our fastest lenses at high ISO couldn’t do good video, so we switched to long exposures. We saw the first evidence of a tsunami around 8:30 PM when the water level went down:

A few minutes later, the water came back in higher than before:

This repeated a few times. While we were shooting, some people beamed flashlights from the cliff into the water, giving us some arty shots.

And that was it. Hope y’all stayed safe. —Harding
